Matteo Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Genius in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded ten goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or did there exist any cohesion keeping it intact from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, but then he publicly stated that the club had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Rumours that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

Lazio became as messy in their performances as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their initial five matches, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to determine if they are improving or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unexpected Comeback

At least one man remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this year. He spent the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his owning club were advocating for him to remain there temporarily. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team lacking backup options.

He signed in the first place under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in 2022-23, almost all of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."

Uncovering His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was still trying to determine the exact type of his skill set. Labeled as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
