From Acclaim to Rage: Conservative Response to Jeffrey Epstein Document Release is Mixed.
Right-leaning responses to the limited disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy redactions portray former President Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so transparent with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's identity and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt serious questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly demanded increased transparency.
“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the statute, and suggested that a future Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he added.
Some Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Release
But, some conservative commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and many of the men shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
But some do not, featuring high-profile individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed some conservative voices to go on the attack.
“This is pretty rich how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Statement
Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been concealing those files for months only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Comment Remains Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud demands for action that preceded the legislative vote to pass a law requiring the files' release.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative influencers were given physical binders of files that contained little new information.
